Judging by the number of “aww!” cries from girls, sending love letters is a very sweet thing to do. I’m not a hopeless romantic or anything, but I have to agree that receiving a love letter would definitely brighten my day and make me feel very loved. Everyone knows deep down inside that a hand-written letter of adoration is pretty much amazing.
Have you ever thought that the Bible is a love letter to you from God?
What if the Bible isn’t a rulebook? What if it’s not just a description of how a Christian should live? What if it’s not a historical documentation of a religion? What if it’s more than just a truth statement? What if it’s so much more than that?
I’m not saying that the Bible doesn’t contain a description of how a Christian should live, or that it’s not truth. But what if those things are just side effects? What if the Bible is true because God is true, and it’s from the depths of his heart to yours? What if the reason that the Bible is a description of how a Christian should live is that a Christian should just be in love with God? The Bible can’t be truth just for truth’s sake. It can’t be guidelines and rules just so that we live a better life. There’s got to be more to it than that, right? It can’t be a textbook that God teaches out of, can it?? Don’t you think that it’s so much more than just a lesson to be lectured???
I’m asking all these questions, and I’ve even got three question marks behind the last one. But I don’t doubt it in the least. The longest, most beautiful, most convicting yet hopeful love letter of all eternity has been written directly to you from God. Because he loves us so much. It’s quite an overwhelming thing, when it finally hits you full force—the fact that every single day, you can fall even more in love with Jesus than you were the day before. Because while there must be limits, somewhere, to love between two people (we’re not perfect, and we’re not infinite), there is no limit to how much we can love God.
Let me say that again:
There is no limit to how much we can love God.
Because he is infinite. His grace, mercy, forgiveness, and love are infinite (Lam. 3:22). And it is, for the first time ever, very literally possible to “lose yourself” in him. He’s written us this ultimate love letter, and we get to lose ourself in our relationship with him.
